JMA Students Winners in RYHFF/Sheff Coalition Film Contest

(April 27,2015)- JMA student Nicole Ellis earned the first-ever Social Justice Award for a short film focused on racial justice in education. The 2015 Third Annual Reel Youth Hartford Film Festival took place on Saturday, April 25th at Cinestudio, 300 Summit St, Hartford. The Sheff Movement was proud to partner with the Reel Youth Hartford Film Festival this year by sponsoring the festival’s first-ever Social Justice Award.

The Festival was open to middle or high school-aged youth who live in or attend school in the Greater Hartford area. Students had the task of telling a story—in eight minutes or less—that addresses the theme of “Racial Justice in Education.” Some guided questions were suggested: How has Sheff v. O’Neill—the local civil rights struggle for quality integrated schools—affected you, or your family, friends, and community in the city or suburban region of Hartford, Connecticut. What has been achieved? What challenges remain?

Moreover, JMA Seniors Bishnu Khatiwada, Samur Hewitt-Hendley, Shyiann Johnson, Shannon Thomas won in for Best Cinematography for their short film titled "Cafetorium Twins" The Best Screenplay awaard for- "Leslie Finch & The Whitmore Case" was presented to seniors Tenia Franklin, ViQuan Herring, Odane Campbell, Adrien Sanchez, Luis Mejias-Diaz, Keyanna Tucker-Williams, Samur Hewitt-Hendley, Shyiann Johnson, Shannon Thomas.

The festival hosted a red carpet event on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 6:00 pm at Cinestudio. Films were screened from 6 to 8 pm, followed by a reception for all student film makers and audience members with food, beverages, a raffle, and live DJ. Awards for the various prize categories were announced at the end of the reception. Nicole Ellis was awarded a$250 cash prize from the Sheff Movement coalition.
