Description: The Civics class provides an analysis of the responsibility of each citizen’s involvement in government life and in society. The Civics class asks students to determine what makes a quality citizen, specifically that citizen’s responsibilities in the national, state, and local governmental institutions. Within that governmental framework, Civics students become aware of their civil rights and liberties. Finally, the Civics class offers a perspective of a citizen’s role toward other countries and their inhabitants.

Description: World Geography is a semester long course designed to provide students with a basic understanding of and interrelationship between physical and human geography. Instruction is in accordance with the content standards set forth by the Common Core and Hartford Public Schools curriculum. Major topics covered include the elements of geography, introduction to the basics of physical and human geography, Africa, Southwest Asia (The Middle East), East and Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe, Russia, Latin America and modern geographical concerns and their historical roots.

Description: International Studies is the study of global issues in the modern age. Students practice thinking and writing like historians as they grapple with key essential questions. Topics covered will include: Human Rights, the Status of Women, Genocide, Terrorism, Globalization, Food and Population Pressures, and the United States involvement in the Middle East. Students will utilize their emerging skills in debate, research paper writing, and demonstrating mastery of subject matter via creation of technology based projects.

Description: This course examines the success and obstacles in American history beginning with the Progressives’ reform movements, Manifest Destiny, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the impact of imperialism, the changing nature of business and government, World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the growth of the United States as a world power, the Cold War and the struggle to achieve class, ethnic, racial, and gender equality. The course extends to the modern day. Contemporary world issues such as globalization, economic interdependence, terrorism and world cultures will also factor into our analysis of international conflict and cooperation. The Connecticut state standards provide both the framework and pace of this class. The curriculum and academic expectations will be differentiated to accommodate gifted and highly motivated students.

Description: Sociology is an elective course that studies human society and social behavior. Positive human relationships are an essential part of a civilized society and how we interact with each other is important so that we can find answers to questions and solve problems in our world. The way that we view the world comes from what we learn in our everyday activities. “The values, beliefs, lifestyles of those around us help to mold us into unique individuals who have varied outlooks on social reality.” This course deals with the social atmosphere that helps to make us who we are and how we behave. Sociology will cover topics such as culture, violence, deviance, social control, socialization and personality, group behavior, social class, and social institutions. The key component of this course is to study ourselves and the society that influences our behavior.
