Health & Wellness Curriculum
Course Name: Physical Education
Duration: 1 Semester (Students required to have 1.5 credits to graduate)
Description: Upon completion of high school, the student will have developed an observational, cognitive and physical skill level in a variety of sports to feel confident in their participation at a recreational level. The student will also have an understanding of the components of physical fitness and how to attain good health and fitness. The following activities are offered: volleyball, soccer, floor hockey, physical fitness, bowling, table tennis, flag football, racket sports, basketball, kickball/wiffleball, and team handball. Grading is based on written assignments, teacher evaluation, appropriate attire and most importantly, active class participation.
Course Name: Health Education
Duration: 1 Semester
Description: All students are required to take and pass ½ credit of Health Education and to participate in substance abuse instruction and prevention each year. Health Education provides students with an opportunity to understand and develop attitudes and skills for decision-making that will benefit them and improve their wellness. This course covers topics in mental health, substance abuse, human immune deficiency (HIV) infection and other sexually transmitted diseases; violence prevention, personal safety and conflict resolution; family life, including sex education with an emphasis on postponing sexual involvement.
